Insight Lighting

Insight Lighting

We are audiovisual artists who design and produce lighting and projection works.

Brendan Clarke and Emma Smith initially met at Camberwell School of Art in the late 1980’s. Brendan set up Insight Lighting whilst still in college. Starting out with a pile of TV monitors and a stack of slide projectors he was soon creating visuals for the early rave scene, and lightshows and visuals for bands such as The Orb. Over the years Brendan has produced visual performances, and collaborated with Pharoah Sanders, Ahmad Jamal and Arun Ghosh amongst others.

Emma previously worked as an artist, curator, art consultant, and visiting lecturer - her work is included in a number of private collections including The Saatchi Collection and the Arts Council Collection. Brendan and Emma started working together in 1997 when collaborating on an early video projection show called ‘Traffic’. The show was conceived as an exploded gallery viewed from the street, that screened video and slide projection works onto windows on either side of Curtain Road.

In the intervening years many varied projects have been designed and produced by Insight Lighting some of which include a permanent lighting and sound commission in an underpass, an alternative firework display of liquid light on the Regents Canal, many mapped and immersive projection environments and mega CRT video walls.

We are especially interested in time-based media and lens based technologies. Over the years we have championed and protected analogue and celluloid presentation and control technologies/techniques and we have taught liquid light workshops and scratch loop film animation workshops at our studio in Clapton.
