Nihal Singh
Nihal Singh is a writer and musician from the United States. He began studying North Indian classical percussion at age five, going on to study with eminent maestros including Bhāī Baldeep Singh, Ustād Zakir Hussain, and Paṇḍit Swapan Chaudhuri.
Nihal belongs to the Sultanpur Lodhi-Amritsari tradition of joṛī-pakhāvaj, South Asia’s oldest living school of classical percussion. He recently completed an MPhil at Oxford University, with his research analysing the the interplay of textuality and orality in the transmission of GurSikh sacred music. Singh is the founding editor of The Vital Anjan, a digital journal of GurSikh idea, culture, & affairs, where he regularly writes on the relation between Western and GurSikh political philosophy.
