Towards Dhiān

Towards Dhiān

A first of its kind audiovisual performance bringing together live projections, joṛī and prepared piano. A five part journey based on elements of Sikh philosophy and musical praxis, this five-part set aims to bring together three seemingly disparate, seemingly distant, arts into a single aesthetic whole, taking audiences on a journey contemplating oneness.

The cathartic sound of the joṛī, an instrument which was extinct until just under three decades ago, breathtaking reactive, experiemental film visualizations and the inherent breadth of prepared piano combine without each element pretending to be what it is not, keeping the organic narratives, histories and performative contexts of each element intact, affording each a dignified place together.

The public will be taken through distinct aural-visual spaces respectively titled uṭhān (ਉਠਾਨ: an encyclopedic pickup), ras (ਰਸ: essence of a state), dhuni (ਧੁਿਨ: a tune), jap (ਜਪੁ: sacred speed) and dhiān (ਿਧਆਨ: a state of meditative wonder, serenity and enjoyment) - words encompassing a slew of concepts both proximal and distant to all.
